"Use of Internal Controls to Identify and Prevent Criminal Activity in Medical Practices"

Description:
Detective Coley McCann of the Nevada Department of Public Safety and Rachael Thomsen, CPA of Eide Bailly will discuss internal controls and best practices to prevent fraud. Rachael Thomsen will share her experiences as an auditor, providing examples of what makes a strong control environment. Detective McCann will discuss what goes into a fraud investigation, the process of reporting, penalties and lessons learned for practices. Leonard Hamer will moderate the panel and comment on his experiences with employee fraud. Time will be allotted for sharing of experiences and questions from the attendees.

Speakers:

Rachael Thomsen, CPA CFE is an accountant in Eide-Bailly CPA and Business Advisor Reno’s office. Rachael is an experienced auditor, having obtained certification as a Fraud Examiner, as well as her CPA. Her expertise includes audits for compliance of employee benefit plans throughout the state, and internal control consulting for closely-held businesses, such as medical practices.

Detective Coley McCann is an experienced peace officer and investigator with the Nevada Department of Public Safety (NV DPS). NV DPS is the state law enforcement agency, which in addition to the NV Highway Patrol, includes investigations and enforcement of various crimes related to auto theft, homeland security, drugs and other major crimes, prescription drug abuse, fraud and embezzlement. Detective McCann has been involved in investigating and prosecuting cases related to medical offices and healthcare facilities.
